IASTM or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, is an evidence-based method of soft tissue therapy performed to improve musculoskeletal function. @Graston and @FAKTR techniques are two of the most well used and available treatment techniques used in Chiropractic, massage , Physical therapy or athletic training facilities. There currently exist various levels of evidence that support its efficacy for a wide variety of conditions.
One of the earlier systematic reviews examining the efficacy of IASTM reported “some evidence supporting its ability to increase short term joint ROM.” (Cheatham et al). Later studies summarized that “IASTM is an effective treatment intervention for reducing pain and improving function in less than a three-month period.” (Lambert et al).
The most recent abstract review was published in the January 2018 issue of the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy. In it the authors draw an even stronger conclusion. After reviewing the literature for randomized control trials, clinical control trials, and pilot studies evaluating the efficacy of IASTM, the authors concluded: “Moderate evidence supports the use of IASTM combined with stretching and strengthening protocols when treating tendinopathies.” (Thompson et al).
Currently @Graston therapy is an integral treatment tool used by at least 18 NFL teams , 16 MLB teams and 16 NBA teams including the Cleveland Cavaliers and the New England Patriots( it seems that the number of pro teams using graston closely follows the number of teams utilizing Chiropractic care ) . Knowing that the most elite world athletes use such an effective treatment shouldn't you consider it in your treatment plan?
@Graston therapy is available literally all over the world. It is cost effective , generally $30-$50 per treatment and if done properly should be painless and integrates well with many other physical therapy modalities.
